Our story

A family that grew with the Cape

When John G. Sears founded this company in 1931, Cape Cod was a different place — quieter, more rural, built on the rhythms of the seasons and the sea. He started with a son by his side, a deep knowledge of the local land, and a belief that a well-tended property was something worth being proud of.

Nearly a century later, that belief still drives everything we do. What began as a small family operation grew into a full-service landscaping company with a nursery, a tree farm, and a skilled team that cares about this peninsula as much as the Sears family always has. We've watched Cape Cod grow and change through every decade — and we've been caring for its properties through all of it.

Five generations

The family behind the name

1931 — First & second generation

John G. Sears & his son

John G. Sears established the company in South Yarmouth alongside his son. His hands-on knowledge of Cape Cod's coastal soil and seasonal rhythms set the foundation for everything that followed.

1956 — Third generation

John G. Sears III

A Stockbridge School of Agriculture graduate, John G. III took over at just 24 years old and led the company for 43 years — deepening its horticultural expertise and building its reputation across all of Cape Cod.

2003 — Fourth generation

Rick & Ken Sears

Sons of John G. III, Rick and Ken grew the business into the full-service landscaping company it is today — the same family dedication that has defined Sears since 1931.

"We've been part of Cape Cod for nearly a century. These aren't just properties to us — they're our neighbors' homes, their businesses, the places they're raising their families. That's always been worth doing right."

— The Sears Family, South Yarmouth, MA

A new chapter

The legacy continues

In 2026, John G. Sears & Son was acquired by Christian Davenport — a Yarmouth native who grew up just down the street from the business he now calls his own. For the Sears family, finding the right person to carry the company forward meant finding someone who understood Cape Cod the same way they did: not as a market, but as a home.

Christian was that person.

Meet the new owner

Christian Davenport — Cape Cod through and through

Born and raised in Yarmouth, Christian has spent his life working the land on Cape Cod. He is the owner of Davenport Farms in Brewster — a working tree farm, nursery, and cranberry bog that has given him the same deep, hands-on understanding of Cape Cod's soil, seasons, and plant life that the Sears family built this company on.

As owner of CDavenport LLC, Christian also brings business acumen and operational experience that will help Sears Landscaping grow and serve the Cape even better in the years ahead. He isn't an outsider stepping in — he's a neighbor, a grower, and a steward of this land who knows what it takes to care for it right.

Under Christian's ownership, the name, the team, and the commitment to Cape Cod remain exactly the same. The legacy of John G. Sears & Son is in the right hands.
