Scheduling & Availability
We recommend booking as early as possible, especially for spring cleanups and summer lawn maintenance. Spring is our busiest season on Cape Cod and scheduling fills up quickly — often by late March or April. Contact us early to secure your spot on the schedule.
We operate year-round on Cape Cod. Our services include spring and fall cleanups, summer lawn maintenance, beach raking from spring through fall, and snow removal in the winter months. No matter the season, John G. Sears & Son has you covered.
Some services such as lawn mowing can still be performed in light rain, while others may need to be rescheduled. Our team will communicate with you if weather affects your scheduled appointment and we will work to reschedule at the earliest available time.
Lawn Care
Most Cape Cod lawns benefit from mowing every 7–10 days during the active growing season (spring through early fall). During periods of heavy rain or heat, mowing frequency may need to be adjusted. We recommend never cutting more than one-third of the grass blade at a time to avoid stressing the lawn.
For Cape Cod lawns, we typically recommend fertilizing in early spring (late April to May) to kick-start growth, and again in the fall (September to October) to strengthen roots before winter. Our specialized lawn fertilization treatments are timed to the Cape's climate for the best results.
Aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots more effectively. Most Cape Cod lawns benefit from aeration once a year, ideally in the fall. Signs your lawn may need aeration include thin or patchy grass, hard or compacted soil, or water pooling after rain.
Bare patches can be caused by heavy foot traffic, pests, disease, or poor soil conditions. We can assess the cause and recommend the best solution — whether that's overseeding, sodding, soil amendment, or a combination. Fall is generally the best time to overseed cool-season grasses common on Cape Cod.
Tree Services
Signs that a tree may need removal include large dead branches, significant leaning, hollow or decaying trunk, extensive pest or disease damage, or roots causing structural damage to your property. If you're unsure, our team can assess the tree and advise on the safest course of action. Always err on the side of caution — a damaged tree can be a serious safety hazard.
Stump grinding uses specialized equipment to grind a tree stump down below the surface of the ground. While not always required, we strongly recommend it — leftover stumps attract pests, create tripping hazards, can continue to sprout new growth, and take up valuable yard space. We offer both stump grinding and full stump removal services across Cape Cod.
Most trees and ornamental shrubs benefit from pruning once a year. The ideal timing depends on the species — flowering shrubs are typically pruned after they bloom, while shade trees are best pruned in late winter before new growth begins. Our team can assess your specific trees and shrubs and recommend the best schedule.
Other Services
Yes, we provide professional snow removal for both residential and commercial properties across Cape Cod. Our services include driveway plowing, walkway clearing, and ice management. We recommend setting up a snow removal contract before the winter season to ensure priority service when storms hit.

Our team uses professional equipment to rake and groom beach areas, removing debris and creating a clean, polished appearance for guests. This service is available from spring through fall.
