Our Story

A Family That Grew With the Cape

Cape Cod looked different in 1931, when John G. Sears started this company — quieter, more rural, shaped by the pace of the seasons and the sea. With his son beside him, an intimate familiarity with the local land, and a conviction that a well-kept property was something to take pride in, he got to work.

That conviction carried the company through 95 years and five generations — growing from a small family operation into a full-service landscaping business complete with a nursery, a tree farm, and a crew that cares about this peninsula just as much as the Sears family always did. We've watched Cape Cod change decade after decade, and we've tended to its properties through every one of them.

The Family Behind the Name

Four milestones, one unbroken commitment to the land of Cape Cod.

  1. 1931

    First & second generation

    John G. Sears & his son

    Founded the company in South Yarmouth, building on hands-on knowledge of Cape Cod's coastal soil and seasonal rhythms — a foundation everything since has been built on.

  2. 1956

    Third generation

    John G. Sears III

    Fresh out of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, he took the reins at 24 and spent the next 43 years sharpening the company's horticultural know-how across the Cape.

  3. 2003

    Fourth generation

    Rick & Ken Sears

    As sons of John G. III, they built the business into the full-service landscaping company it is now, carrying forward the same family commitment that has defined Sears since 1931.

  4. 2026

    A new chapter

    Christian Davenport

    Christian Davenport, a Yarmouth native who grew up just down the street from the business he now owns, acquired John G. Sears & Son in 2026. The Sears family wanted a successor who saw Cape Cod the way they always had — not as a market, but as home. They found that in Christian.

    A Yarmouth native, Christian also owns Davenport Farms in Brewster, a working tree farm, nursery, and cranberry bog that gave him the same hands-on grasp of Cape Cod's soil, seasons, and plant life that the Sears family built this business on. The name, the team, and the dedication to Cape Cod haven't changed under his ownership.

We've called Cape Cod home for nearly a hundred years. To us, these properties are never just properties — they're our neighbors' homes, their businesses, the places where they're raising their families. That's always deserved to be done right.
