Brewster faces Cape Cod Bay, and its whole character comes from that side of the Cape — the sea captains' houses lined up along Route 6A, the Old King's Highway historic district that keeps them looking the part, Nickerson State Park and its kettle ponds, and the tidal flats that run out nearly a mile at low water. Inland it's mostly woods and sandy soil, with the Stony Brook valley and its old cranberry bogs threading through the west side of town.
John G. Sears & Son has cared for Cape Cod properties since 1931, and Brewster is home turf in a way it isn't for most landscapers — our tree farm and nursery, Davenport Farms, is right here in town. Our shop is about 12 miles up Route 6A in South Yarmouth, and between the two we've spent decades learning what Brewster yards need: pond-side drainage, historic-district plantings, shade gardens under the pines, and lawns that hold up to bay wind. Weekly mowing, seasonal cleanups, a full redesign, plowing after a storm — name it, and we've got it covered.

Our tree farm and nursery sits right here in Brewster, so the trees and shrubs we set in your yard have already spent time getting used to Cape Cod — not shipped in and planted the same week.

Davenport Farms
Very few Cape Cod landscapers have a tree farm and nursery of their own. We do, and it's in Brewster: Davenport Farms. We bring in trees, shrubs, and perennials from established growers, then hold them at the farm to be health-checked and acclimated to Cape Cod's sandy soil, salt air, and wind before any of it goes in the ground.
Most crews plant straight off a wholesale delivery truck. We don't. That settling-in period is why a Sears planting takes root faster, handles the coast better, and lasts — and because one team selects, grows on, and installs every plant, we can stand behind what we put in your yard.
The farm is a working nursery, not a garden center — visits are by appointment. Call (508) 398-8151 to talk stock or set up a walk-through.
See How the Nursery WorksCranberry Country
Brewster has been bog country for generations, going back to when cranberrying spread across the Lower Cape from its start in neighboring Harwich. Bogs like the one at Elbow Pond still get wet-harvested every fall; along the Stony Brook valley and elsewhere in town, others have been retired and turned into conservation land, with the spring herring run still pushing up the brook.
For a landscape, a bog or a former bog next door changes the rules. The water table sits high, soils run to peat and muck instead of the usual Cape sand, and drainage has to be planned rather than assumed. We work with it — wet-tolerant native plantings, rain gardens, regraded swales, and lawn areas placed where they'll actually drain — so a low, damp corner becomes part of the design instead of a problem.

What We Do
All of Brewster
Real work in every corner of town, ordered west to east along Route 6A.
West Brewster
The Stony Brook side of town — the grist mill and herring run, working and retired cranberry bogs, and wooded lots on sandy rises between low, damp ground. Drainage planning and wet-tolerant plantings do a lot of the heavy lifting here.
Brewster Village & Route 6A
Sea captains' houses, mature street trees, and formal dooryard gardens along the Old King's Highway. Most of what's visible from 6A falls under historic-district review, so plantings and hardscape here are chosen to fit the street, not fight it.
East Brewster & the Ponds
Nickerson State Park, the big kettle ponds, and homes tucked back in the pitch pine and oak toward the Orleans line. Shade gardens, pond-edge buffers, and keeping mature trees healthy are the everyday work out here.
