Fresh Mulch, Put Down Right

Nothing smartens up a property faster than fresh mulch. It holds moisture in Cape Cod's fast-draining soil, too, and keeps weeds down all season.

Our mulch crew spreads it at the proper depth and sweeps up before they leave. Beds that also need edging, weeding, or pruning get a visit from our bed maintenance crew first.

The Prep Is What Makes Mulch Last

Mulch spread over weeds and soft edges hides the problem for a few weeks at most. Weeds push through, the lawn creeps in, and by midsummer it all looks tired again.

So we split the job between two crews. When the garden needs it, our edging and weeding crew goes first: a clean edge, weeds pulled, plants pruned. Our mulch crew, which handles nothing but mulching, then puts down fresh mulch deep enough to protect roots without smothering them.

What's Included

More Than a Truckload of Mulch

Our mulch crew sticks to mulching. If the garden needs cleaning up first, our edging and weeding crew takes care of it before they arrive.

Prep, If Needed

Our garden bed maintenance crew can get things ready first, so the mulch goes down on clean soil instead of last year's weeds. Already in good shape? Then we send the mulch crew straight out.

  • Clean edge cut along lawn and walkways
  • Weeds pulled and debris cleared
  • Shrubs and perennials pruned

The Right Depth

Too thin and weeds come through. Too thick and roots stay wet and starved of air. Our mulch crew spreads it to the depth your plantings need.

  • About 2 inches to top up existing mulch
  • About 3 inches for new or bare areas
  • Kept back from trunks and stems, never piled up
  • Built-up old mulch removed when it's mounding

Color Matched

Choose from five bark mulch colors, or we'll match what's already down so the refresh looks seamless.

  • Black, Hemlock, Antique Hemlock, Pine, Light Pine
  • Matched to your existing mulch on request
  • See the mulch colors

Cleanup

When we leave, there's no stray mulch on the lawn, walks, or driveway.

  • Walks and driveways blown clean
  • Weeds and debris hauled away
  • Left finished and ready to enjoy

How the Job Runs

Why It Matters Here

Mulch Works Harder on Cape Cod

Cape Cod's fast-draining soil lets water slip past roots quickly, and summer sun and wind dry out bare soil even faster. A layer of mulch slows that down and keeps moisture where roots can reach it, so plants need watering less often.

It also keeps soil temperatures steadier through hot spells and freeze-thaw swings, blocks the light weed seeds need to sprout, and slowly breaks down into organic matter that improves the soil underneath.

Most flower beds need a fresh layer once a year. Spring is the most popular time, and fall mulching gives new plantings extra protection going into winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

About 2 inches to top up existing mulch, and about 3 inches for a new or bare planting area. Deeper than that can hold too much moisture against roots and stems. We also keep mulch pulled back from tree trunks and shrub stems instead of piling it up against them.
Spring is the most popular time, once the garden is cleaned up and the soil has started to warm, so the mulch is in place before summer heat and weeds. Fall mulching works well too, especially for new plantings that benefit from the extra protection over winter.
Only when it's needed. Old mulch breaks down and feeds the soil, so in most cases we simply top it up with a fresh layer. If the old mulch is getting too high or mounding up around plants, we remove some of it before the new mulch goes down.
Mulch is measured in cubic yards. As a rule of thumb, multiply the area in square feet by the depth in inches and divide by 324. You don't need to do the math, though. We'll work out how much mulch you need as part of your free quote.
Yes. Mulch installation is a popular add-on to a spring cleanup. Once everything is cleared and cut back, our mulch crew follows up on a separate visit and puts the mulch down on clean ground.
For whole-property projects, we can drop off bulk mulch if you'd rather spread it yourself. For a typical home, our crews install it for you.
Yes. We install mulch for condo associations, businesses, and large estates across Cape Cod, as well as residential properties.
